There are three concepts when it comes down to moose calling: The first one is that moose calling is very easy, even kids can do it with a little bit of attention and practice. The second one is that moose calling really works and it will improve your efficiency. The final concept is that you must be patient, don’t give up that easily because if you do then your efficiency will remain intact.

Depending on the period of the year and the rut’s current status, you can use three basic sounds: brush trashing, bull grunts and cow calls. These calls can be used alone or you can combine them; calling should be done for a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 40 minutes at a time, at a 3-5 hour interval.

Brush trashing – these sounds can be imitated in many ways. What you must do is find a dead spruce and break some branches off so that you can produce a loud cracking noise. By chopping some dry timber with an ax or by using ax handles, dry limbs or shoulder blades so that you can trash bush will work just fine.

Bull grunts – the grunts of a bull range from hiccups to powerful coughing sounds. A deep short “U” sound should do the trick. Try to imitate this sound as perfect as you can; practicing before won’t hurt anyone.

Cow calls – the cow calls vary in length ( 2 seconds – 1 minute ) and are in most cases, higher in pitch in comparison to the bull’s grunts and you can imitate them using “e”, “r” or “errr”. You should start off low and carry the “r” as long as you like. Next, gradually raise the pitch right in the middle of the call; afterwards, lower the pitch while you taper the call off at the end. Pinching your nose is recommended because it will produce a nasal effect that will make the bull grunts and cow calls sound more realistic.

Besides these three sounds there are other sounds which you can imitate. For example, if you are near a water ( lake, river, pond, wet swamp ) you might want to pour some water into the water to imitate the sound of a moose that is urinating. Making the sounds that a moose makes when he is walking will do the trick as well.

After you have made your mind and decided to call in a certain area, you should watch that area throughout the entire day. Although moose aren’t very active during day, they can go out searching for food so you never know when luck hits you.

As the season progresses you should gradually increase the intensity and length of your calling routine. Combining two or more types of calling and adding some brush thrashing will increase your chances for a successful call. If you are in the situation when a moose is fleeing you should try a long cow call because you have nothing to lose, maybe you will get lucky.

All in all, when it comes down to moose calling there are many ways to do it; combining two or more techniques is highly recommended; imitating the sounds made by a walking moose is also recommended. With a little bit of practice anybody can do it, patience and practice is all it takes.
